HILAL BAYDAROV (b.1987) is an Azerbaijani filmmaker born in Baku. Trained initially in computer science, he later studied film directing in Sarajevo under Béla Tarr. His debut feature HILLS WITHOUT NAMES (2018) premiered in Montreal. He gained international recognition with BIRTHDAY (2018), WHEN THE PERSIMMONS GREW, MOTHER AND SON (2019) and NAILS IN MY BRAIN (2020), the latter completing his KATECH trilogy. His films have screened at major festivals including Visions du Réel, IDFA, Sarajevo, and Cinéma du Réel, and are noted for their minimalist form and meditative exploration of memory, time, and existence.
